4 Reasons Why Your Dog Might Need Regular Baths

Dogs might be furry, cuddly blankets (or footwarmers, depending on the size), but there’s no denying that some of these four-legged creatures need bathing more regularly than others. If you’re wondering whether you might need to indulge in a dog shower or bath every so often, these tips will give you a nudge in the right direction, just like your pooch might nudge you towards their food bowl every morning.

1. Does your dog have an oily coat? Some breeds of dog have fur that’s naturally oilier than others. This is when a dog shower comes in useful as these breeds will need bathing more frequently. For example, some dog breeds are built for the water and have coats designed to accommodate regular swimming. Most pets don’t get this sort of exercise and so their coats can be too oily. An outdoor dog shower might help these breeds:

  • Basset Hounds
  • Chesapeake Bay Retrievers
  • Labrador Retriever
  • Newfoundland

It could be tricky to fit a Newfoundland in your bath tub, so the best thing to do is invest in a portable dog bath or portable dog wash kit to keep them clean out in the garden. An outdoor dog shower could also travel with you when you go on trips, keeping your pooch clean then too. If your dog is another breed and has an oily coat, speak to a professional before undertaking a regular dog shower because it might be a symptom of an underlying problem. Plus, remember to keep an eye on your dog’s health just to check that you’re not showering them a bit too much. Some dogs can enjoy an outdoor dog shower more than they should!

2. Does your dog have skin issues? Many dogs have skin conditions that need regular attention or they risk contracting infections. Some breeds are more susceptible to this than others and keeping them clean with a regular dog shower can be vital to their health. These breeds are examples:

  • Bernards
  • English Bulldogs
  • Shar Pei
  • Pugs

If you’ve been advised by your vet that your dog is prone to infections, regular washing using a dog shower is the best way to keep them healthy.

3. Does your dog have long hair? Whichever way you look at it, long-haired dogs are going to be smellier than their smaller counterparts. That hair can get covered in all sorts of things, many of them not exactly pleasant! The only way to get rid of the mess (and the corresponding smell) is to get them clean. That’s why having a dog wash system is vital if you have a dog with long hair that needs care.

4. Does your dog have a nose for mischief? It’s true that some dogs are just better at getting into trouble than others. Perhaps yours has a liking for swimming in dirty puddles or keeps dragging themselves through a berry bush and coming away smelling of blackberries. Whatever the reason for the smells they bring home, it’s unlikely you want to live with them. Investing in a decent dog shower kit might be the only way you can get through a day without having to hold your nose.
